The wind swirls around on an end of summer day
And acorns fall in buckets to the ground
The winter burns as spring comes on and groves of oaken treelets
And their generation mould a new landscape

As each of those young saplings probably reaches for the sky
Like a toddler trying to grow to be his Dad
Together on a mission, like a fight to save their species
They become the grandest forest ever had

The tree just won't grow tall til it's surrounded by the others
Trying to keep the sun's warm light all to themselves
And while some weaklings can't survive and die along the way
It's a forest for the trees and nothing else

It never fails eventually an acorn on his lonesome
Gets carried to a very different land
A stream will probably drop him somewhere in the midst of nowhere
And dare him to just try and play his hand

And though stranger things have happened
This renegade oak sapling
Spent 100 years thriving anyway

But when you check the other oaks that have grown to reach the heavens
This old oak is just a dime-a-dozen fail
Yet for the keen observer it's a pioneer explorer
On a ship that never knew it had set sail

A lonely oak that grew among the fields, the weeds, and buzzards
Is quite the picture for an audience of none
Albeit short his crown still makes him king of an unassuming land
And his generations mould a new landscape

The tree just won't grow tall til it's surrounded by the others
Trying to keep the sun's warm light all to themselves
And while some weaklings can't survive and die along the way
It's a forest for the trees and nothing else
It's a forest for the trees and nothing else
